Living in Los Angeles is great if you’re a fan of films both new and classic. Yes, there are 45 multiplexes in the greater L.A. area alone, but there are also several wonderful repertory cinemas playing all kinds of classic films. Other cities have such classic or art house theaters, no doubt, but it’s certainly not as prevalent. This is why it’s wonderful that Turner Classic Movies is bringing several beloved movies back to theaters nationwide in 2016 through Fathom Events, so even more people have the opportunity to see great films of yesteryear on the big screen.
Each month in 2016, TCM and Fathom will release another old favorite for two nights only—one Sunday and one Wednesday—as part of their Big Screen Classics series, hosted and introduced by either Robert Osborne or Ben Mankiewicz (depending on the screener). There will be 12 movies in total, since that’s how calendars generally work. Wanna know what movies? Wanna? Here, we’ll tell you:
- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid will ride a bicycle with Katharine Ross on Jan. 17 and 20
- The Maltese Falcon, the classic starring Humphrey Bogart will celebrate 75 years on Feb. 21 and 24
- The Ten Commandments, wouldn’t be Easter time without it, on March 20 and 23
- On the Waterfront, the greatest movie about dock workers ever, on April 24 and 27
- Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, you may have heard of it, on May 15 and 18
- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory goes to a world of pure imagination on June 26 and 29
- Planet of the Apes on July 24 and 27 (arrive early; it’ll be a MAD HOUSE!!!)
- The King and I, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, on Aug. 28 and 31
- Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb drops the bomb on Sept. 18 and 21
- The Shining plays with us on Oct. 23 and 26
- Breakfast at Tiffany’s (I said, I think I remember the film) on Nov. 27 and 30
- From Here to Eternity crashes waves on Dec. 11 and 14
