Nerdist News Talks Back

Talking GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY with Gerry Duggan, Plus COWBOY BEBOP and PlayStation

While we like to think of every installment of Nerdist News Talks Back as among the most important bullet points on the timeline of human events, today’s episode is a particularly special outing. Joining host Jessica Chobot and Nerdist Senior Editor and The Dan Cave‘s own Dan Casey for this latest discussion on the hottest in geek culture is honored guest Gerry Duggan. Avid comic readers will surely know Duggan for his work on Deadpool, Uncanny Avengers, Secret Wars, Doctor Strange, and, most recently, All-New Guardians of the Galaxy and will be excited to hear that he visits Nerdist News Talks Back with a few secret codes that can be redeemed for Guardians comics at Marvel.com… that is, if he can find them. (Keep watch throughout the episode—he just may dig a few up.)

If there’s one thing we here in the pop culture biz know for sure, it’s that nostalgia is never to be underestimated. That’s a lesson one Sony executive could have taken before claiming, in defense of PlayStation’s resistance to backwards compatibility, that most contemporary fans wouldn’t be interested in revisiting old games. Needless to say, the comments—accompanied by some maligning of the old games’ aesthetics—earned a bit of backlash from the gaming community. So where do we stand on the issue?

Speaking of reviving old favorites, this morning couriered the announcement that Cowboy Bebop would be finding new life as a live-action American series! Excited though we may be, we do have some questions. Will the world of Cowboy Bebop resonant just as well today as it did almost 20 years ago? Can it work just as effectively as a live-action series as it did in animation? And who on Earth could possibly play the iconic roles of Spike, Jet, Faye, and Ed?

Back to Duggan! We’re thrilled to have the esteemed writer on hand to discuss his changes to the Guardians canon. Notably, he’s made Drax a pacifist and relegated Groot to the youthful form we first met in the movies. What other changes has he got planned for the cosmic crusaders? And speaking of stirring the pot, maybe we can get a few answers about Duggan’s recent decision to have our beloved Agent Coulson off our likewise beloved Deadpool!

Let us know what you think of old PlayStation games, a new Cowboy Bebop, and everything Dugganian!
