I remember when I was in high school, I was in band and they had a fundraiser where we sold candy bars, and if you sold a certain amount you got these cards that ran through a reader telling you what prize you won. I wanted to win cash so I could buy SimEarth, which was the first computer game I remember having to save up to buy. When I finally got it, it was no SimCity. Bummer.

The first video game that I saw a commercial for and had to get was ‘X-Men’ for the Sega Genesis. My best friend had a Sega and I played it all the time at his house, so I’d been begging my parents for one for months… Christmas came around and I got my Genesis with a copy of ‘X-Men’.

The game was impossible as a young kid. After level 5 you had to ‘soft reset’ the console to move onto level 6.

The Adventures of Danny and Mike is pretty great. Go check it out if you like Pete and Pete, especially episode 2 with Chris Gethard.

The first video game I can remember trying to buy the moment it was released was Pokemon X.

What an amazing podcast! It was my first encounter with your work and wow it is so wonderful. The adventures of Pete & Pete was my favorite show when I was growing up. Words can’t describe how much this show taught me about existence. It resonates an epic nostalgia in the Nickelodeon kid. The coolest role models for sure. Fingers crossed for the DVD!
The first video game I can remember I was trying to buy was turn based strategy game: Heroes of Might and Magic IV… the last game to be developed by New World Computing. Great, now I craving to play it again.

Also very good point on new generation kids missing out on tactile experience with toys. Maybe this is the reason for Bieber to have his weird bucket list 🙂

    Thanks Pop Culture, you rock!

    P.S 5 stars on Itunes.
