By now, Robert Kirkman is likely a household name where you live. Presuming that your home includes one or more of the 13.7 million people who tuned in for The Walking Dead‘s season 6 premiere. But now, just as he’s done with his comic book bibliography, Kirkman is expanding his TV empire with the exorcism drama Outcast.
Based on his Image Comics/Skybound title of the same name, Outcast premieres on June 3 on Cinemax, and looks to raise the stakes yet again for what viewers can expect from horror TV. The show tells the story of Kyle Barnes (Patrick Fugit), a disconnected young man who has been plagued by demonic possession as long as he can remember. Now, with a rash of possessions on the rise in his hometown, Kyle must team up with a troubled preacher named Reverend Anderson to find answers and solve this problem before it’s too late.
Given that Cinemax has already renewed Outcast for a second season, I was understandably excited when I sat down with star Patrick Fugit, showrunner Chris Black, producers Robert Kirkman and David Alpert, and director Adam Wingard at our Saloon at SXSW. In our wide-ranging conversation, we discussed what readers can expect from the series, how horror maestro Adam Wingard approached the exorcisms, bringing artist Paul Azaceta’s panels to life, and much more.
