After several years in which the X-Men seemed to take a backseat at Marvel, they appear to once again be on the rise. On the heels of new X-Men spinoff series for Rogue and Gambit, Legion, and The Gifted, word has broken that a new Storm title is on the horizon from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and artist Jen Bartel.
Via Newsarama, The Philly Inquirer’s Dawn Fallik tweeted that Coates confirmed the news in an interview that she conducted with him earlier this week. Marvel has yet to make an official announcement, but considering that Coates is already writing the Black Panther ongoing series, this seems pretty likely to be true. Coates dropped a few hints about a new Storm series during New York Comic Con, including this tweet.

Coates is a writer and a national correspondent for The Atlantic, and he’s been a key figure in Marvel’s most recent relaunch of the Black Panther series, while co-writing the spinoff series World of Wakanda and relaunching The Crew. Bartel is best known for her work on America, Jem and The Holograms, and Secret Loves of Geek Girls.

It’s not yet clear if the new Storm comic will be an ongoing series or a miniseries. Storm last had her own comic in 2015, which came to an end after 11 issues. Currently, Storm is no longer the official leader of the X-Men, but she’s been one of the key members of the team for decades. We would love to see Coates and Bartel flesh out Storm’s life outside of the X-Men and expand her reach as a solo heroine.
