Stop-Motion SUPER MARIO BROS Cake Is Deliciously Fun

It might surprise you to learn that we here at Nerdist.com love video games. As shocking as that fact might be, we also have to admit that—oh boy, this is tough to say—we also love cake. It feels so good to be honest about things like that. It’s like a weight has been lifted. No longer will we be considered that website with hard opinions on desserts! With that in mind, when something comes along and combines video games and cake it’s nearly impossible for us to contain our embarrassing penchant for gluttony excitement.

A stop-motion version of World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. was created in cake form by YouTube’s Gamer Boy Media, and it’s as delicious as it is detailed. Using a spinning tiered cake for the backdrop, various confections surround our cookie-fied hero as he jumps his way to victory. A level so widely recognizable as World 1-1 makes a fantastic theme for a small scale stop-motion piece like this, as it’s already imprinted in our brains, allowing us to anticipate and enjoy the edible representation.

After watching “Super Bakery Bros” a few times, you’ll find it’s the little touches that make the video so great. Goombas and koopa shells are made with small cupcake wrappers that smoosh (technical term) when Mario jumps on them. Stone blocks made of brownies are a nice touch, ditto the the invisible 1-up block, which is simply a cube of plain cake. The layers in the ground-level tier even have red frosting to represent the Mushroom Kingdom’s all-too-common lava. Man, that world is a geological nightmare. The making-of video below shows the immense amount of work that went into such a short clip.
