Matt Smith Joins the Cast of STAR WARS: EPISODE IX (Report)

Star Wars: Episode IX has started production and added Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, and Dominic Monaghan to the already established cast of returning players. Now, a former Time Lord may be joining them for the finale of the Skywalker Saga.

Variety is reporting Matt Smith has been cast in Episode IX, but his role is currently unknown. Smith could be a member of the Resistance; he certainly had plenty of experience playing a hero during his Doctor Who tenure. However, Smith did portray Skynet in Terminator Genisys, so we can’t rule out a villainous turn as an officer in the First Order. Alternately, Smith’s character could be someone who remains neutral in the intergalactic conflict.

After Smith left Doctor Who, he lined up a starring role as Prince Philip in Netflix’s The Crown. He also appeared in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Mapplethorpe, and Patient Zero. Smith is also starring as Charlie Manson in Charlie Says, so that’s another opportunity for him to play a bad guy.

Lucasfilm has yet to confirm or deny Variety‘s original report, but Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver are all slated to return for Episode IX. Billy Dee Williams will also reprise his role as Lando Calrissian, and presumably side with the Resistance. We’ll find out more as we get close to the December 20, 2019 release date. Catch up on everything we know about Episode IX so far.
