Sony’s Response to Microsoft’s Cross-Platform Play Idea Gives Hope

Microsoft batted its eyes from across the console bar at Sony this week, and while the two aren’t exactly dating quite yet, Sony didn’t exactly recoil in disgust at the obvious flirting.

Yesterday we told you about Microsoft’s new feature that makes it possible for XBox users to play online with Windows 10 users, with Rocket League as the first title up for cross-platform play. However, the even bigger takeaway was the potential to also offer the feature with other PC users, and, surprisingly, the PS4. It was clear Microsoft was hinting at the formerly unthinkable union with PlayStation when they said they have an “open invitation for other networks to participate as well.”

Now we know Sony is considering it. Kinda. Sorta. Maybe.

In response to a GameSpot question directly asking if such an arrangement were possible between themselves and Microsoft, Sony said, “We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.”

Alrighty, so they didn’t say yes…or even refer to Microsoft by name, but for all of you eager to play games with your friends that bought the wrong damn console even though you told them to buy the other one, it’s hard not to feel like this:

Sony pointed out that they have offered cross-platform play with PC users with certain titles as far back as 2002 (Street Fighter V has this feature now), but this is obviously a whole different monster.

Microsoft dipped a toe in the water, and Sony is at least sitting poolside, debating whether or not they also want to take a swim. Whether the two ever come to an agreement or not though, the community pool won’t be open for quite awhile for gamers.

But at least Sony didn’t sink the possibility.

What do you think? Will Sony ever take Microsoft up on their offer? Tell us what you think in the platform of our comments section below.
