Carrie Fisher’s Advice Column is from the Dark Side

Star Wars fans the world over know Carrie Fisher primarily as Princess Leia, while some others might know her best for her work as a novelist, script doctor, and subject of her celebrated one-woman show, Wishful Drinking. Now Carrie Fisher is adding yet another job description to her resume — that of advice columnist.

This week, The Guardian debuted a new advice column from Fisher, where she offers to give guidance to younger people who are looking for help. To give the whole endeavor that extra Star Wars flavor, her column is appropriately called Advice from the Dark Side.

So what makes Carrie Fisher uniquely qualified to give advice to those going through tough times? Because despite being Hollywood royalty and a sci-fi icon, she’s been through it in her life, and come out the other side. And when I say been through “it” — I mean pretty much everything.

In Fisher’s own words, “in spite of the drug addiction and celebration marriage and mental illness and divorce and shock treatment and heartbreak and motherhood … I’ve turned out to be (at close to 70) a kind of happy person (go figure!) A human who’s had her fair share of challenging and unhappy experiences. Over time, I’ve paid attention, taken notes and forgotten easily half of everything I’ve gone through. But I’ll rifle through the half I recall and lay it at your feet.”

Whatever advice that Fisher ends up dispensing, you know it’ll come with her trademark razor sharp wit. One of highlights of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens press tour last year was Carrie Fisher just being her off the cuff, witty self while being asked the same dumb, sexist questions about her diet on TV talk shows over and over.

To sum up her inaugural column, Fisher said the following: “So then either judge me, or disagree with me, or tell me I’m fat and don’t look good for my age (your words not mine) or find some solace and inspiration. If my life wasn’t funny it would just be true and that’s unacceptable. Tell me your story, I’ll tell you mine. We’ll meet at the pub and get back into the swing. What have you got to lose? ”
