Carrie Fisher Finally Gets Her Scene With English Darth Vader

Darth Vader. Only you could be so bold. The Imperial Senate will not sit still for this. When they hear you’ve attacked a diplomatic–“

“Aye, don’t act so surprised, luv. You weren’t on no mercy mission round ‘ere. Several transmissions were beamed right ‘ere to this very ship by Rebel spies. I wanna know what ‘appened to the plans they sent you.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I am a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan.”

“Rubbish! You are a part of the Rebel Alliance and a wanker!”

Alright, maybe it wasn’t quite like that, but when Carrie Fisher was on the set of the original Star Wars films she wasn’t conversing with the iconic James Earl Jones — his voice was only dubbed during post-production. Instead it was David Prowse playing Vader…and his West Country English accent. Fisher (feisty as ever) said his voice was responsible for his on-set nickname: “Darth Farmer.”

So when Fisher was a guest on The Jonathan Ross Show recently alongside comedian Russell Howard, who just so happens to be from the West Country himself, the host decided it would be fun to see what a British Darth Vader may have sounded like speaking with Princess Leia.

You know what? Using James Earl Jones was probably the right call.

In truth, Lucas never intended to use Prowse’s voice (though he didn’t share that with the entire cast and crew), and it’s easy to see why:

That doesn’t quite scream “most dangerous villain in the universe” as much as it does “angry tea shop owner,” but it sure is funny.

“Nah, it’s me is your father.”
