Sony Announces GHOSTBUSTERS, MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Dates, Plus New Edgar Wright

Not to be outdone by other studios, Sony is the latest to show their hand of what movies they have lined up for the next few years. Although we may not be camping out for some of these like we would for Star Wars, DC, or Marvel films—there are some pretty interesting things on the horizon, including release dates for Ghostbusters and The Magnificent Seven, a Jumanji reboot, as well as Uncharted, Resident Evil 6, and even a couple Bad Boys movies.

Money Monster  4/8/16
The Shallows  6/24/16
Ghostbusters  7/15/16 (new date)
Patient Zero  9/2/16
The Magnificent Seven  9/23/16 (new date)
Underworld 5  10/21/16
Passengers  12/21/16
Jumanji  12/25/16
The Dark Tower  1/13/17
Resident Evil 6  1/27/17
Bad Boys 3  2/17/17
Baby Driver  3/17/17
Barbie  6/2/17
Uncharted  6/30/17 (new date)
The Lamb  12/8/17
Bad Boys 4  7/3/19

Notable amongst this list is heist film Baby Driver which—while details are still scarce—will be written and directed by the amazing Edgar Wright. With the remarkable track record of Wright’s films, we certainly have some incredibly high hopes. The sci-fi Passengers penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) will star Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence and involve deep space colony transports of the human race. And The Dark Tower will hit theaters in early 2017 and if you listen really close to the wind on a quiet day, you can hear the faint whisper of Stephen King fans everywhere collectively saying “F***ing FINALLY!”

Uncharted has got me a bit nervous as I love love LOVE these games. Historically, video game movie adaptations have been—how do I put this nicely?—a bit all over the place. However it IS a wonderful time for films based on intellectual properties that have die-hard followings. So a live-action Nathan Drake could work out well if the filmmakers hold a reverence for the source material. If done right, I can see it filling that Indiana Jones-shaped hole in our hearts that still stings after the impossible Labeouf-ian gymnast monkey swing time we saw in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

And then there’s the sequels and re-makes. I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m willing to bet that with most of today’s movie-goers Underworld 5, Resident Evil 6, and Bad Boys 3 & 4 will make somewhere between “some” and “all of the dollars.” And now this may be considered movie blasphemy, but I don’t think remaking films is entirely a bad thing. Sure, the original Jumanji needs no improvement and still holds up to this day—the CG in it was groundbreaking at the time, and in my mind, any Robin Williams film is perfect just the way it is—still, re-making Jumanji seems like it could bequeath us a genuinely fun time.

Then there’s also that second Ghostbusters remake with a male cast. With Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd producing with the intent of expanding the GB universe, does it have the potential to be good? Absolutely. Does it NEED to be made? and so soon? And with Paul Feig’s all-female Ghostbusters well into production? We’ll see.
