SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Fans Don’t Know What to Make of Film’s First Look

Movies based on video games don’t have the best track record, but fans of Sonic the Hedgehog have been optimistic that Sega’s beloved mascot could hit the big screen running. With Parks and Recreation alum Ben Schwartz voicing our favorite blue blur, Jim Carrey playing Doctor Robotnik, and Jame Marsden and Tika Sumpter joining the cast, things seemed to be speeding along nicely for the CGI/live-action film.

That momentum came to a screeching halt when we were given our first look at the film. The motion poster for the movie started out okay, with gold coins being plucked from the air. Then that iconic hedgehog we all know so well came to a stop, giving us a glimpse at a furred, swole Sonic with shoe laces (shoe laces!).

If there was any doubt Sonic’s been spending a lot of the time at his favorite gym working his legs, an early glimpse at another poster also shows him looking super fit. On today’s Nerdist News, host Jessica Chobot hits play on fans’ furious responses to the character’s appearance. Is this just another example of a full blown internet overreaction or something we should be angry about?

It’s true change is always scary, but that’s the challenge of adapting a popular character to the big screen. There’s a reason most video game movies don’t collect a lot of gold coins at the box office.

What do you think of Sonic’s new look? Are you upset by it, or do you think these changes make sense? Tell us why in the comments below.
