Whether or not you believe in the paranormal, there’s nothing like a good old ghost story. Despite the fact that they’ll probably scare the living bejesus out of you, in Denise Hemphill’s humble opinion, they’re always good for getting your mind off your problems. They also happen to be at the center of this week’s episode of Scream Queens, which was appropriately titled “Ghost Stories.” Though it had its fair share of foolishness, we got a better look at the Red Devil Killers’ motives, heard a couple of spooky tales, andâof courseâsaw a couple of murders. Plus humor was back and in full force, which is probably in large part due to Niecy Nash (Denise), and the always amazing Glen Powell (Chad).
Following Boone’s (Nick Jonas) reappearance at the end of the previous episode, this week’s kicked off with the not-so-dead frat boy walking around campus in his Joaquin Phoenix getup. After having yet another Gladiator reference thrown his way, Boone decided he’d had enough and ditched the disguise. It didn’t take long to get recognized however, as Chanel No. 3 was the first to come face to face with Boone’s “ghost.”
After encountering him, No. 3 ran back and told the rest of the Chanels that she was being haunted by a “dead gay Boone,” which prompted Denise to bring up her ghost story coping method. To get the girls’ minds off the red devil-related events, House Mama Denise sat them all down and told them a couple of shocking stories. Not long after recounting the story of The Red Cloakâwhich saw a girl forced to choose between red or blue toilet paper a la the red pill/blue pill decision in The MatrixâDenise ran into a similar scenario, when she went to the bathroom. When faced with the colored toilet paper, one of the red devils attacked her, but failed because of course Denise Hemphill would not go down that easily.
After scaring the earmuffs off of No. 3 (not literally, unfortunately), Boone cut his hair and “appeared” to his old roomie Chad. Just like 6, Chad totally bought Boone’s “I’m a ghost” story and high-fived him. When asked why he was back as a ghost, Boone remarked that he had some unfinished business to take care of. Despite appearing gayâwhich he later revealed that he made up as part of the planâBoone is determined to have sex with Zayday Williams so he can stay on earth.
While Zayday waited for her beau Earl Gray to come back with the chocolates, champagne, and silk robe he has conveniently stashed in his room, Boone showed up and tried the Ghost explanation on her. Clearly smarter than the previous two, Zayday sees right through the story, and accused him of faking his own death. When Grace came in, she accused him as well, and stated that it made sense because nobody would expect him if they thought he was dead. But when the girls went to grab him with the intention of turning him in to the authorities, he fell out the window and disappeared.
While all of this was going on, Hester was downstairs telling the girls another story. If you’re familiar with the “Killer in the Backseat” urban legend, Â you’ll recognize the tale. Apparently back in the 50s a girl was out driving alone at night. When a truck started following herâflashing his lights and honkingâshe fled but eventually found out that he was doing that because there was a killer in her backseat that kept popping up to try to kill her. Frightened by both the story and Boone’s reappearance, Chanel No. 5 left the house and soon found herself in a similar scenario. Apparently after he fell out the window, Boone had snuck into her backseat. After a trucker warned her, Boone came out and murdered him with a machete.
When Chanel No. 5 came back to the house, everybody was shaken because of Earl Gray’s murder and Boone’s reappearance. Chanel no 5 wondered why nobody cared about how she survived the crazy red devil attack. With the attack mirroring the story they just heard, Chanel told her that next time she gets attacked, she should make it more original. After that, Hester (wearing her neck brace again) showed up and told the girls that her ultimate vengeance for being made fun of was to have sex with Chanel’s boyfriend Chad, and also revealed that she is pregnant with his child. When Chanel confronted him about it, he said that he messed up but should probably marry Hester and take her home for Thanksgiving now. Chanel told him that he is going to pay for that, maybe even the ultimate price, which prompted Chad to ask if she was the killer. Her reply: “We’ll just have to see.”
Angered by the recent development, Chanel met with 3 and 5 and told them that they need to murder Hester for what she did. They then proceeded to catch her in her lies by offering her sushi, soft cheese, and champagne (all things you can’t consume while pregnant). After finally admitting that she wasn’t pregnant, Chanel pushed her down the stairs and she died. Considering this show’s track record, she could still be alive, but I could be wrong.
While all of this was going on, Boone was engaged in a meeting with the other red devil. Though it seems like they are on the same page about Gigi needing to be cut out of the picture, the red devil stabbed Boone from behind as he was confronting her. Though we had already suspected, we also found out that the other killer and Boone are the bathtub twins. Though the other killer’s identity is still up in the air, I have a sneaking suspicion that it is Chanel No. 5. Considering the fact that two murder attempts this episode mirrored the ghost stories, I think it is safe to say that the killer is one of the Chanels. While 5 was almost killed by Boone, I think it’s pretty important that he went for the trucker instead of her. Then again, it could be 3. Her father is Charles Manson after all.
