Ronda Rousey Lobbies Harder for Marvel’s CAPTAIN MARVEL

Ronda Rousey wants to be your superheroine. Or more specifically, she wants to be Captain Marvel. Earlier this month during a reddit AMA, Rousey revealed her desire to play one of Marvel’s signature heroines on the big screen.

“A lot of the good ones have been taken, but I’d like to vie for Miss Marvel,” wrote Rousey. Ms. Marvel was the codename of Carol Danvers when she debuted as a superheroine in 1977. More recently, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy reimagined Carol Danvers as Captain Marvel and her popularity has skyrocketed. DeConnick’s run on that title is one of the main reasons that there’s a Captain Marvel movie on Marvel Studios’ schedule.

Yesterday, Rousey posted the following image to her Instagram account along with this message: Since the reddit AMA I’ve received so many badass Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel edits! There were so many cool ones I couldn’t pick just one to share – here’s 1 series of 2. Big thank you to contributing artists: @bosslogix (two on right) and @salman.artworks (left).

Rousey also posted two additional pieces of fan art depicting her as Captain Marvel. “Big thank you to contributing artists: @alexmurilloart (right) and whoever did the art on the left (sorry I can’t find the original😔)”

No one can deny that Rousey has the right look for Captain Marvel or that she’s a phenomenal MMA fighter. The question is whether Rousey can carry a film by herself. She’s had roles in Furious 7, The Expendables 3, and Entourage, but it’s really too soon to tell whether Rousey’s fighting abilities and her natural charisma will fully translate into Hollywood stardom. Rousey was recently signed to star as herself in a biopic, so that may be her first big test as a leading lady. Whether that helps her land Captain Marvel remains to be seen.
