Rocky Balboa Passes the Torch in First CREED Trailer

It’s been nine years since the last Rocky sequel; it’s time for a new fighter to enter the ring!

Sylvester Stallone is back for a seventh time as Rocky Balboa, but this time the focus shifts to Adonis Creed, played by Fantastic Four star Michael B. Jordan. In Creed, Adonis pursues the legacy of his late father, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and seeks out Rocky to train him as a boxer.

Rocky and Apollo were rivals in the first two Rocky films, but they became friends in Rocky III when Apollo trained Rocky for his rematch with James “Clubber” Lang (Mr. T). In Rocky IV, Apollo was killed in the ring by the ruthless Russian boxer, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren). His death led Rocky to defy the odds and avenge his friend in front of a crowd in the Soviet Union.

Director Ryan Coogler’s Creed makes a number of callbacks to the Rocky films in the first trailer. But Creed seems to be adopting a more emotionally grounded take on the Rocky franchise, as Adonis deals with the absence of his father and Rocky rediscovers his purpose in life. Essentially, Rocky has become the new Mickey (Burgess Meredith).

The Creed trailer also offers a first glimpse at Tessa Thompson (Dear White People) as Bianca, along with Phylicia Rashad as Apollo’s widow, Mary Anne Creed.

What do you think, Rocky fans? Does Creed have what it takes to go 12 rounds at the box office? Are you excited to see another Rocky movie? You don’t have to eat lightning! Just leave a comment below!
