RIVERDALE Season 3 Has a DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Inspired Mystery

Are a you Dungeons & Dragons fan, eagerly awaiting the rumored big screen movie? Well, you may have to keep waiting on that front, but it appears that D&D will be influencing another beloved pop culture property very soon. Entertainment Weekly has revealed that the upcoming third season of Riverdale will be inspired in part by the classic role playing game. Oh, and by True Detective too. Who would have ever thought to mash those two influences up? It sure looks as if Stranger Things won’t be the only show about a group of kids solving mysteries with D&D as a major reference anymore.

The D&D influence will affect an upcoming episode which features the younger cast of the show playing their own parents in high school, back in the ’80s. The murder mystery that Betty and Jughead will follow in season three will reflect a mystery their parents were involved in back in the day. According to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa,  “the murder victims in the present were playing a game called Griffins & Gargoyles. Our kids discover that when their parents were in high school they also were playing this game, and there was a similar murder that happened in the past.”

“Griffins and Gargoyles” really does sound like the knock-off cheaper version that would have appeared back in the day. Because for every Transformers, there was always a Go-Bots. Considering Betty and Jughead will be investigating a cult style killing at its center–True Detective–maybe something supernatural is involved. That might make the Dungeons & Dragons angle more than just a metaphor, if we find out that an Owlbear or a Displacer Beast is behind it all. Too bad Sabrina is on another network; they could have the teenage witch’s help on this one.

Riverdale returns to the CW on Wednesday, Oct. 10, and the D&D inspired flashback episode will be airing on Nov. 7
