RICK AND MORTY’s Pass the Butter’ Robot Gets a Flamethrowing Upgrade

Imagine the existential angst you’d experience if you learned that the entire reason for your being was defined by one totally menial task. Would you grow despondent… or would you get angry? Angry enough to head to the battle arena armed with flamethrowers? That’s just what this 120-pound version of Rick and Morty‘s “Pass the Butter” robot got to do at this year’s RoboGames.

TeamTiki Combat Robotics‘ Micah “Chewy” Leibowitz built this oversized replica of Rick’s sad little breakfast assistant, but gave his version something to do besides help you prep your toast. Leibowitz armed it with flamethrowers and a new purpose in life: kill other robots.

Not the outcome Pass the Butter was looking for, but at least he got to live–really live! Even just a few seconds of exhilarating action far surpasses the dark reality faced by the original version.

YouTube is full of other real life replicas of this robot, most of which are small like Rick’s original. But we’re all about robot combat. Who doesn’t love a giant, flamethrowing machine–one that can also help us out at breakfast?

But we do have one question about this version: has it been programmed for an even more important purpose?

Flamethrowers and friendship? That would be a real killer combo. (Which might really come in handy someday, because you never know when some mad scientist might Cronenberg the whole planet.)
