Report: Is a SUPERGIRL Television Series On The Way?

While DC Entertainment might be way behind Marvel Studios when it comes to their movie output, they are certainly catching up when it comes to their television productions. Aside from the hit CW series Arrow, this fall also is seeing the debut of The Flash, Gotham, Constantine and iZombie. And now potentially add another DC character to the list: Supergirl.

Deadline is reporting that Greg Berlanti, the man behind Arrow and the upcoming Flash series for the CW, is teaming with producer Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) for a new series based on Kal-El’s famous cousin. DC Entertainment CCO Geoff Johns is also expected to be involved. According to the original report, this will be “a new interpretation of the Supergirl character and her story” which is vague enough that it could mean anything. The series is expected to be taken out in a couple of weeks and pitched to the major networks the way Warner Brothers did with Gotham, which ended up at Fox. Contrary to a report that ran earlier in  Bleeding Cool, it seems that writer/producer Michael Green isn’t involved with the project at this stage.

If this turns out to be something that comes to fruition, it opens up a whole can of worms: would it be tied into the DC television mini-universe that includes Arrow and Flash? Could the show be tied into the DC Cinematic Universe? Man of Steel included an Easter Egg of an empty capsule in the Fortress of Solitude that tie-in comics have confirmed belonged to Superman’s cousin Kara.  A version of Supergirl also showed up with some frequency on Smallville, played by Laura Vandervoort, so it’s possible that this could be a spin-off of that series (but probably not). Whatever version we get, it’ll almost certainly not be able to feature Superman, which should make this series pretty interesting. It would be like doing a Nightwing show without being able to show Batman. Whatever ends up happening, one thing’s for sure — it’ll almost certainly be better than the horrible movie from the eighties which had movie stars Peter O’Toole and Faye Dunaway slumming it hard.

Funny thing: I’ve been hoping Nightwing would join the Arrow cast at some point. I read something long ago, an interview or something I don’t remember; but it left me with the impression that while they couldn’t have Batman on Arrow they could insinuate his existence and have ancillary characters.

I could’ve dreamt that who knows, but it would be awesome IMO.

Hmmm. They couldn’t get Wonder Woman off the ground but they’re going to take a swing with Supergirl? I’ll believe it when I see it.

  3. Considering AdIer worked on Chuck, I REALLY hope Yvonne Strahovski is cast. And also hope the show is part of the Arrow universe.
