R.L. Stine and Jack Black Unveil the Practical Effects of GOOSEBUMPS (Exclusive)

Goosebumps, R.L. Stine’s beloved spooky children’s book series, was a staple of the 1990s. With over 60 stories, a spinoff television series, and legions of fans, the fiction series is considered a classic to kids who grew up in that era and has a particular tone and style. Last year’s film adaptation, starring Jack Black as a fictional R.L. Stine whose monstrous literary creations come to life, thankfully imbued the movie with inventive ghosts and ghouls, a madcap misadventure, and enough dark comedy to truly make it a Goosebumps tale.

One of the most crucial elements of the film was its creatures, which were inspired by iconic R.L. Stine stories like The Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, Attack of the Graveyard Ghouls, and of course, Night of the Living Dummy. The filmmakers clearly understood the importance of Goosebumps villains, and used mostly practical effects to achieve truly scary and tangible monsters.

In honor of the film’s Blu-ray 3D and DVD release, R.L. Stine, Jack Black, and the Goosebumps cast and visual effects team pulled back the curtain on some of the film’s practical effects. From the ghouls’ prosthetic fingers and intense makeup to the machinations of Slappy the demonic Dummy, the video above is an awesome look into the way practical effects can elevate a movie.

Goosebumps is available on digital release now, and a special Blu-ray 3D combo pack with an alternate opening and ending, cast blooper reel, deleted scenes, and more, will be available January 26.
