You probably already know who you’d like to see win this year for Best Film and Best Director, and you most likely already have favorite nominees you want to see walk away with the acting Oscars. But what about Best Score? Great music is just as vital to a memorable moviegoing experience as direction, acting, writing, or any other element. Maybe your aren’t sure who should take home that trophy, though. Maybe you need to listen to the nominees again to make your decision. Well, if that’s the case, we have some very cool news for you.
On Wednesday the 24th and Sunday the 28th (the day of the 88th Academy Awards), public radio station Q2 Music from WQXR “presents Lights, Camera, Music!, a 24-hour kaleidoscopic survey of innovative and new-music inflected film scores,” where they will play, in their entirety, the scores for the five films nominated for music this year. Which means you can sit at your desk and listen to the amazing scores for each of the films for free.
The five nominees are:
- Thomas Newman (Bridge of Spies)
- Carter Burwell (Carol)
- Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight)
- Jóhann Jóhannsson (Sicario)
- John Williams (Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
In addition to those movies they will also play “David Lang’s music for Youth” as well as “compelling selections from The Revenant and Pan’s Labyrinth alongside scores by Nico Muhly, Philip Glass, Jonny Greenwood, Cliff Martinez and Trent Reznor.”
As someone that didn’t love The Hateful Eight as much as most people, I can honestly say that score is one of the best things I saw…err, heard…in any movie in 2015.
