This year Pyrex is celebrating its 100th anniversary and to kick off the celebration, World Kitchen unveiled the World’s Largest Measuring Cup, as certified by Guinness World Records, at last weekend’s International Home & Housewares Show.
Everyone has had a Pyrex measuring cup in their kitchen at one time in their lives, but itâs nothing compared to this beast. At approximately 3,000 cups large, itâs more than 1,500 times the size of the iconic 2-cup measuring cup. Since the trade show was in Chicago, in a nice homage to the city, Pyrex filled the massive measuring cup full of Chicagoâs own Garrett Popcorn. Mmm…3000 cups of pop corn-y deliciousness.
Pyrex has an interesting scientific history. The glass was originally developed as lantern glass for railroads, but when Bessie Littleton, the wife of a Corning scientist, asked her husband to bring home some leftover glass to use in place of her broken casserole dish, she used it to bake a cake and just like that the heat-resistant glass became an invaluable piece of kitchen history. Why bake? Because science! Sorry Nerdist fans, I had to.
Vintage glassware collectors are devoted to Pyrex and regularly scour the internet in search of elusive pieces from the ’50s and ’60s. With a fanbase that dedicated, itâs no wonder Pyrex has easily hit its 100 year anniversary and continues to keep on going.
About that Worldâs Largest Measuring Cup, anyone up for a breakfast of 3,000 waffles?
