Proof That Gilbert Gottfried Should Voice All Video Games

Imagine a world where every video game voice actor in the world went on strike. And what if only one man was willing to get in the booth and record all of those voices for the most iconic moments in gaming?

If that man was Gilbert Gottfried, all of our gaming memories would be weird and a little confusing, I think.

Gottfried showed us this alternate, darker (?) timeline in this video for Game Informer. In it, he does his high-pitched yelling thing for classics like Metal Gear Solid 2, Resident Evil, Mario 64, and Shadows of the Colossus. It’s funny if only for making me imagine a world where all of Ron Perlman’s performances were overdubbed with Gilbert Gottfried’s voice (his French lines in City of Lost Children would, I suspect, truly be a thing of beauty).

This wouldn’t be the first voice work for the actor and comedian: besides his stint as an insurance-selling duck, he played Iago in Disney’s Aladdin in ’92 and returned to the role in the film’s direct-to-video followup. It seems he couldn’t quit Iago when Disney and Square Enix asked him to come back yet again for Kingdom Hearts Re:coded in 2010. And that’s just one character – with such a distinctive performing voice, he’s been busy over the years (I almost forgot that he was Mr. Mxyzptlk in Superman: The Animated Series).

Like Bobcat Goldwait, Gottfried has made his career out of a vocal chords-straining persona, and it always comes as a shock when you get to hear their normal speaking voices. For me, it was when the comedian hosted USA’s defunct late-night movie block, playing against character using a flat, affect-less version of his own voice. You can hear the real deal here.
