Point blank: there are far too many music festivals. That’s just the way it is in 2016, and although that means more collective experiences for more people (a good thing!), it also means homogenized lineups as a way to ensure profitability (bad thing!). That is why music festivals that are a bit smaller, more selective, or more regionally focused are, in my humble opinion, better.
Enter FYF Fest: the scrappiest, fastest growing festival on the West Coast. Though most people think of this event as Coachella’s little sister, this is far from a bad thing. Being the premiere festival in LA affords FYF the chance to be a homecoming of sorts for Angelenos that have made it bigâKendrick Lamarâand for local acts that are on the riseâVince Staples, Kelela, Julia Holter.
This festival gets better every year without sacrificing its soul and the lineup for 2016 is pretty untouchable. Virtually everyone in the Nerdist office was stoked about several different acts on the list because how could you not be? Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala, Air, Grimes, LCD Soundsystem, Grace Jones (!!), Vince Staples, Young Thug, and Saves The Day are all in one place for probably the first time ever, and I will be damned if I don’t see each and every one of those bands play.
Since spring has us in a good mood and we cannot wait for summer vibes to set in in full force, here is a huge playlist of the acts we are most excited to see this August at FYF. Spoiler alert: it’s every act.
Matt Grosinger is the Music Editor of Nerdist and cannot wait for FYF 2016.
