Kiefer Sutherland Wrote a Country Song and Made This Video

Some people love actors who sing. Others, not so much. Kiefer Sutherland, he of 24, Lost Boys and the little-seen-but-wonderful Touch has released a video for “Not Enough Whiskey,” the first single off his upcoming “Americana-tinged” album Down in a Hole.

The video shows Sutherland singing while putting on a shirt, looking in the mirror, donning a cowboy hat and wandering into a bar, all the while singing about how his woman left him and that there isn’t enough whiskey in the world to make the pain go away. Then he pours himself a glass and pushes it away. Hidden message? Don’t drink whiskey when you’re sad? His gravelly voice sounds both untrained and strangely soothing, though his constant direct-to-camera looks are actually a bit uncomfortable to watch. He and his songwriting partner Jude Cole filmed this at a hotel and bar in one long shot and he financed the video himself.

Not convinced that actors should do this sort of thing? “If I hear about an actor doing a music project, my eyes are the first to roll,” Sutherland told Rolling Stone. “It’s been done before and, on some levels, not very well. A lot of actors make records but won’t tour to support them or make videos, and it ends up not being serious. I felt strongly that this was something I wanted to do.”

Of the song, he said, “I’ve certainly been there, where something will happen in life, and one, two, three bottles of whiskey are not going to fix it. In the context of the song, those moments are important to realize so you have to find another way to deal with them. I’m sure a lot of people have felt that way.”

Weird as the video is, it’s actually a beautifully simple song. Put aside your actor/singer issues for a sec and check it out. Want to see him perform it live? You can check out Kiefer’s website for tour dates. If this just isn’t your thing, we’ve added a video to make you laugh/squirm/lament the fact that you weren’t around when this was live on TV. Just watch, then tweet us @Nerdist and let us know your thoughts.

Down In A Hole will be released this year. The song will hit iTunes on April 8, 2016.
