BREAKING BAD Gets a VR Experience on Playstation 4

The world of Breaking Bad currently lives on in Better Call Saul, but that doesn’t mean that fans have seen the last of Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Although their respective stories ended back in 2013, Walt and Jesse are heading to PlayStation 4 with a new Breaking Bad VR experience from series creator Vince Gilligan.

Variety broke the story about Gilligan’s deal with Sony Interactive Entertainment to create a Breaking Bad virtual reality title. All we know so far is that it won’t be a game, per se, and it will not be released this year because it is still in the early stages of development. The report notes that Gilligan became enamored with the idea of using Sony’s VR technology for Breaking Bad during a visit to the Sony Interactive campus.

So how would a Breaking Bad VR experience even work? It’s not entirely clear what Gilligan and Sony have in mind for this title. The first thing to determine would be where it falls within the narrative of the series. For example, there’s a very big gap in time during the fifth season that might be fruitful grounds for exploration: that in which Walt finally gets everything he wants from “the empire building business.” But since Jesse wasn’t partnered with Walt at the time, it may not be the ideal choice.

Presumably the VR title could allow players to experience the story through the eyes of Walt and/or Jesse, and there are definitely locations that we’d like to explore in that world. A closer look at Saul Goodman’s office, the hidden superlab of Gus Fring, and even Los Pollos Hermanos would be on our wish list. Hopefully we’ll learn more about this Breaking Bad VR experience during E3 later this month.
