Playing POKÉMON GO Is a Lot Easier Using a Drone Instead of Walking

Pokémon Go is serving the dual purpose of letting gamers fulfill lifelong dreams of being Pokémon trainers and getting people moving around out in the real world. But there’s one drawback: The real world sure does require a lot of walking. (My cousin walked nine miles the other day looking for Pokémon, but he did manage to find a Seel hotbed).

One player figured out a way around all that exertion, though: Tumblr user Perchbird, who also goes by Liam, rigged his phone onto his drone and lets his flying robot do the work.

His setup is relatively simple and should be somewhat accessible to those who already own a drone. He taped his phone to his drone, and uses an app on his phone and laptop called AirDroid, which allows him to access his phone remotely through computer software. As you might imagine, this method has its limitations.

“If I was on data, it would work much better,” Liam told Gizmodo. “The drone can go around 1,500 feet away from me and that is the estimated range of using Pokémon Go on a phone duct-taped to a drone.” Liam relies on a wifi connection to make this possible, and without it, the connection to his phone would be too inconsistent for this setup to be functional.

Still, there’s hope for those in more ideal living situations than Liam: His home is a suburb in Massachusetts, so perhaps players in a city might be able to get a drone-based Pokémon Go playing method to work. Then again, a fleet of drones flying around the city in pursuit of fictional monsters would qualify as unsettling.
