Pickstarter: Rosy Press Kickstarts Romance in Comics

Superheroes are great and all, but sometimes a girl wants a little romance with her beautifully-drawn comic books. Enter Rosy Press, the brainchild of longtime comics editor Janelle Asselin. Launching soon, the press’s first project is in the midst of a wonderfully successful Kickstarter to fund the all-digital romance comics magazine called Fresh Romance.

Asselin launched the Kickstarter campaign at the beginning of April and fans of her work, the work of her collaborators (more on that in a second) and fans of the genres in general gleefully watched pledges pour in from all over. Within three days, the Kickstarter was funded with the initial asks. Working on the first issues of the projects are great comic talents like Kate Leth and Arielle Jovellanos with Amanda Scurti for one of the first stories; Sarah Vaughn and Sarah Winifred Searle for another; and Sarah Kuhn and Sally Jane Thompson with Savanna Ganucheau working on the third.

Here’s a quick rundown of the first stories Fresh Romance will publish. Leth, Jovellanos, and Scurti are collaborating on a classic high school romance with two queer women in the lead. Searle and Vaughn are working a classic Regency romance a marriage on the docket and reluctant participants in it. And Kuhn, Thompson and Ganucheau are working on a coffee shop romance with a barista who wants to make love connections among her customers if only so she doesn’t have to deal with them anymore. Sounds like a story right up my coffee-loving alley.

“I’ve literally spent over 5 years studying how to diversify the comics industry from a publishing standpoint, a marketing standpoint, and a distribution standpoint,” Asselin recently told Comic Book Resources in an interview. With experience editing the Bat Group at DC Comics and multiple properties for Disney, she saw an opportunity to fill a void in the comics industry and jumped at the chance. Given the quickness with which the Kickstarter reached its initial ask, the community is clearly ready for what she’s serving. I can’t wait to read the first issues of Fresh Romance and all the projects that her imprint will publish in the future.

The Kickstarter for Fresh Romance and Rosy Press was asking for $25,000 initially – a sum it got pledges for in the first 3 days – and is now seeking additional funding to work with more creators, artists and writers. There are still 2 weeks for you to make pledges that will infuse a new publishing imprint with the seed money it needs to pay its talent and produce new excellent books for readers.

You can keep track of Rosy Press on Twitter and Instagram as well as through the Kickstarter.
