People in China Are Wearing Fake Sprouts on Their Heads Because Sure

The earth is constantly becoming more and more of a global community as technology lessens geographic limitations that previously kept humans apart, both physically and culturally. Now, with that said, we still don’t get everything that our Chinese friends are into, but we are fascinated by them.

To the American sensibility, Chinese fashion has always been a bit opulent and extreme–then again, we’re the ones pumping out Lady Gagas and Miley Cyruses. But it looks like a new fashion trend is taking over Beijing, and we are trying our very best to understand it: People of all genders and ages are putting fake sprouts on their hair so it looks like a small plant is growing out of their head. Some of the sprouts are fashioned to look like regular bean sprouts, while others look like little flowers.

The Pikmin video games have sold very well internationally, but we didn’t realize China had taken to them so intensely. Or maybe this is their way of emulating when Finn lost his arm on Adventure Time? Actually, the more popular speculation is that the look is inspired by one of the characters from popular Chinese cartoon Pleasant Goat and the Big Bad Wolf.

The good news is that Shanghaiist tells us our fashion-forward readers can get their own sprouts here for 0.86 yuan (about 13 cents), but the bad news is that link doesn’t seem to have them and we’re not the best at navigating Chinese websites. Also, we’re thinking you’re probably not too worried about it. To make up for not having your own plant jutting out from your hair, live vicariously through the people in the gallery below.
