Pennywise Floats a Little Closer in This Clip From Stephen King’s IT

Stephen King is masterful at scaring us with monsters ranging from psychotic cars to rabid dogs, but what sometimes gets lesser attention is his ability to pull back the curtain on the darkness that exists within human beings, even in good ol’ folksy small towns. In this new trailer for It, both sides of the author are on full display.

[Warning: NSFW language, in reference to actual bodily waste]

The trailer pulls no punches with language or creep factor. It’s clear that there are some bad, bad people in Derry, but also that an evil clown is quite happy to exploit them to feed on fear.

Yes, the old boarded-up house seems like an obvious red flag for kids to avoid, as do scary clowns, but remember, the It of the book took the form of Universal Monsters at times, so it is not above using tropes that work, and work well on little boys and girls. And these kids are no-BS, apparently willing to bear arms and certainly to use language their parents would not approve of. We doubt the movie will go all-in on that one particular scene–if you’ve read the book, you know the one–but this trailer exudes such a sense of danger, it’s not clear we can rule it out.

What say you? Are you nervous around balloons now? Is this scary clown as nightmarish as some others? Scare up y0ur thoughts in comments below.
