What Can We Expect From the OBI-WAN KENOBI Stand-Alone Film?

Charting the future of the Star Wars franchise “ain’t like dusting crops!” We’ve long known that Disney and Lucasfilm have plans to keep the Star Wars films coming even after Episode IX hits theaters in 2019. Yesterday, word finally broke that the rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi stand-alone film is being actively developed with Stephen Daldry attached to direct it. Today’s Nerdist News is searching the Force for clues about what we can expect to see in Obi-Wan’s solo adventure!

Join host, and the galaxy’s top Jedi hunter, Jessica Chobot, as she looks at the most likely possibilities for the man they call “Old Ben.” Aside from Rogue One, Obi-Wan has had a presence in every Star Wars movie, including The Force Awakens. But we think we can rule out that era simply because having Obi-Wan’s Force ghost roaming the galaxy wouldn’t exactly scream “blockbuster movie.” And because Obi-Wan died in A New Hope, the classic trilogy era is also out.

That really only leaves us with two possibilities: Either the Obi-Wan film will be a story about his pre-Phantom Menace adventures (as a child or whatever?!?!) or it will take place in the 19 year gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. It’s important to note that there is no script at the moment, and there’s also no guarantee that Ewan McGregor will reprise his role from the prequel trilogy. But that’s what we want to see, and McGregor at least seems open to returning.

Even though most of the Expanded Universe has been wiped from canon, Marvel’s Star Wars comic book series has actually featured a few flashbacks to Obi-Wan’s time on Tatooine, where he tried to protect the helpless residents from the local crime lords while keeping his Jedi skills a secret. That could definitely work as a story, but we can also envision a tale in which Obi-Wan’s old friend, Bail Organa, is able to convince him to briefly leave Tatooine on an important mission for the Rebellion. The possibilities are very intriguing, and we’re curious to see how it will play out.
