What Can We Glean From STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI’s Poster?

Most fans agree–that new poster for the latest Star Wars movie is pretty cool. But we wouldn’t be nerd writers if we didn’t try to mine the significance of every detail and design choice, would we?

For example: is the cross-like shape of the larger-than-life stylized lightsaber blade a reference to Kylo Ren’s crossguard, or merely a callback to the way Luke’s lightsaber appeared on the very first Star Wars poster? Does the division of Kylo and Luke imply that they’ll be jockeying for position as Rey’s new mentor?

Qui-gon-jinn

More pointedly, as many have theorized, does this signify the concept of the Gray Jedi will be formally introduced to the movies? Able to use Dark Side abilities without being corrupted by them, Gray Jedi surfaced many times in the old Expanded Universe canon. It was even theorized that Qui-Gon Jinn was one, though considering how Qui-Gon unleashed both Darth Vader and Jar Jar Binks upon the universe at large, he might not be the best role model. Teaching Obi-wan how to come back as a Force ghost and guide Luke to Yoda might mitigate that some. (We’re not certain to what degree the Force delivers afterlife karma.)

Nerdist News’ cameras were there at the unveiling of The Last Jedi poster, and we take a look, in the video above, at  how it was received and what it could mean. But we’d like to hear from you: what do you see in the image? Is it just something cool, or are there clues where the narrative will go? And this is why we have a comments section below. Use the force of your keyboard to weigh in!
