North Korea is Still a Threat in the HOMEFRONT: REVOLUTION Trailer

This morning, publisher Deep Silver released the announcement trailer for Homefront: The Revolution, giving us a gameplay-free look at the sequel to the 2011 shooter.

Set some years after the Greater Korean Republic’s (ha) invasion of the United States, The Revolution will put you in the role of a freedom fighter attempting to liberate us from those wily North Koreans. From the publisher:

“Coming to Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation®4, PC, Mac and Linux in 2015, Homefront: The Revolution throws players into a near future dystopia. Catastrophic events have brought the United States to its knees and enabled the Korean People’s Army forces to impose a brutal military occupation. Trapped in this American nightmare, Philadelphia has become a police state, where surveillance drones and armored patrols keep her once-proud citizens at heel, crushing any dissent with totalitarian force. “

I’m especially curious about the promise of guerrilla warfare and infiltration tactics: specifically, how will these kinds of encounters (or are they discrete missions) be set up and will there be elements like in Fallout 3 where the mission isn’t over until everyone aiming a gun at you is dead (versus forgetful AI in other shooters that will go about their business once you’ve left their field of vision).

It’s been a couple of years since Crysis developer Crytek took over development of Homefront: The Revolution following the fire sale for publisher THQ’s assets, and I’ve been curious what the studio had planned for the license. According to the press release, they’ve been opening up the game, moving it away from the rather linear first title, to a shooter with what they’re describing in the press release as “a sprawling open-world city” filled with unscripted combat.

We’ll keep an eye out for more details as E3 approaches.
