New THE HANDMAID’S TALE Pics Make Season 2 Look Apocalyptic

As if things didn’t seem dire enough on The Handmaid’s Tale in the award-winning first season, things are about to get so much worse. Hulu just released the first look at the second season of the dystopian sci-fi drama adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s iconic novel, and honestly, things look downright apocalyptic. Yeah, sure, it could be argued that the end of the world already kind of sort of happened when women lost all rights and were sold off and forced to work as sex slaves for men, giving birth to children they weren’t allowed to parent under threat of death. But these images look as if the world is about to get its revenge for all the horrifying human rights violations currently taking place in Gilead.

As fans remember, season one ended with Offred’s (Elisabeth Moss) fate up in the air. She had just learned that she’s pregnant, but she was taken away in a van either to get punished for her rebellion against Gilead or to escape the prison her life had become. According to Hulu, season two is shaped by Offred’s pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. “Gilead is within you” is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), and season two finds Offred and all the characters fighting against — or succumbing to — this dark truth. But while the first look photos don’t give too much away in spoilers, they do show that things could and will definitely get worse for the Handmaids, including Offred.

The first photo shows the oft-discussed but never-before-seen Colonies, the dead land that has become most of North America. Pollution runs rampant, and people are often sent there for punishment. Their lives are in stark contrast to the cushy lives of Gilead’s elite, and The Handmaid’s Tale is going to explore that in depth in season two.

The second photo shows a funeral in Gilead attended by Handmaids, which means it might be a funeral for one of their own. It’s snowing and their thick, heavy and black costumes are a big change from their red cloaks and white bonnets in season one. Who had died? Their faces are all obscured by red veils, so it’s hard to determine who is missing from their ranks. And is the weather getting worse? Does that signify something bigger happening in the world that will affect everyone’s lives?

But the last photo is honestly giving us life. The image shows Offred covered in blood, but it doesn’t look like it’s her own. Is she finally getting some bloody justice on all those who have wronged her? It’s a pretty long list so the possibilities are endless. But if the blood does end up being hers, that’s going to suck because this is our new vision board for 2018: Offred kicking ass and taking names.

What do you think of all The Handmaid’s Tale season two photos? Do the colors and harsh climates indicate that things are about to get a whole lot worse for everyone, Gilead officials included? Where do you think season two is heading, considering we’ve moved past Atwood’s original source material from her novel? Tweet me at @SydneyBucksbaum and let’s discuss!

The Handmaid’s Tale season two will debut in April on Hulu.
