Netflix’s Cancelled Marvel Shows Can’t Go Anywhere for a While

For all the fans who were waiting for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service or Hulu to pick up the recently cancelled Marvel Netflix series, you might not want to hold your breath. According to a report in Variety, the deal for the Marvel shows has a clause in it that prevents the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after their cancellation. Which means Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist couldn’t show up anywhere else until at least 2020.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom here, depending on how you look at it. Daredevil was one of the most well reviewed of the modern Marvel live-action properties, and fans and critics alike were legitimately in love with Charlie Cox’s version of Matt Murdock. Mike Colter as Luke Cage was just as beloved, even if opinions on his second season were mixed. Also, Iron Fist is a character. It would be crazy for Marvel to reboot and recast at least two of these without a serious fan backlash, and the casts of both shows have expressed their desire to return one day.

Disney could easily announce at hypothetical Daredevil season 4, or rather, a new sequel series featuring the character (how does Daredevil: Man Without Fear sound?) a year from now, and then drop the first season of the show by December 2020. Sure, it sounds a long ways away, but we already waited almost two years between the second and third seasons of Daredevil. Waiting two years for another version of the show is really just more of what we’re used to.
