Nerdist Playlist: Here’s What We Hope is on Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix Vol. 2

Spoilers below. Be good to yourself and go see Guardians if you haven’t!

America is hooked on a feeling (Ooga Chaka!). Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix Vol. 1 from Guardians of the Galaxy just officially topped the Billboard 200 chart at the #1 spot while Star-Lord, Groot, and the rest of the Guardian gang continue to slay in the box office.

The final scene of Guardians of the Galaxy is one of those gloriously triumphant scenes, wherein we feel satisfied with narrative, but also prepared for the sequel and all the action that will entail. The real cliff-hanger, however, is what will be on Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix Vol. 2. The music was such a significant stylistic device and narrative mechanism through which to understand Quill as a sympathetic character. In short, we are dying to know what will be on that cassette tape.

After a very serious and formal office poll (lol), we have compiled a wish-list/projection playlist about the ’60s and ’70s rock and soul gems we are hoping Peter Quill’s mom put on the Awesome Mix Vol. 2. We also had some help from this interview with James Gunn about how he approached the soundtrack. We already know that “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” will appear on the upcoming mixtape, but the rest of the playlist was guesswork about how groovy a lady Meredith Quill was. Though Star-Lord is an ’80s kid, we expanded upon the same era of soul, smooth rock, and somewhat underrated pop that was explored on Vol. 1 (so sad that Flock Of Seagulls’ “Space Age Love Song” is D/Q’ed right off the bat, but maybe there will be a certain Doctor Who playlist in the future where it will find a cozy space-home).

Below you will find a f*cking rad playlist that we can see soundtracking Gamora-Quill sexual tension, valiant yet self interested displays of heroism, and of course, sing-along diversions that our heroes will hopefully be able to use against Thanos.

What songs do you think absolutely have to be on the Awesome Mix Vol. 2? Sound off on the comments below and let us know on Twitter!

Since “She Works Hard For The Money” was released in 1983, that sort of DQ’s it, doesn’t it? (Awwwww….)

i just found one that would have worked on Vol. 1 but i guess it’d fit if we find out who Star-Lord’s dad is too. BJ Thomas: Rock and Roll Lullaby.
