Nerdist News: SHERLOCK Theme Park in the Works, Fantastic Four, and More!

Hey, friends! You know that famous Monty Python bit where the guy eats so much food he explodes? That’s this episode of Nerdist News. We’re literally bursting at the seams with killer stories today. We’ve got the cast for the new Fantastic Four movie. We’ve got the official reveal of Rocket Raccoon’s voice from Guardians of the Galaxy. We’ve got word of a potential Apple-Tesla team-up. And to top it all off – the announcement of a Sherlock Holmes theme park! One wafer-thin mint and our news would be splayed all over the internet.

Speaking of Sherlock:

Harry Potter has a theme park; Lord of the Rings might be getting one; So, why the hell shouldn’t Sherlock Holmes get one as well? The answer to that question might well be elementary. It seems as though plans are being put into action to get an interactive, multimedia attraction based around Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s immortal sleuth built in Portsmouth, Conan Doyle’s place of residence when penning the stories, according to the Daily Mail.

The £25 million project (which equates to roughly $46.65 million) will include plot reenactments and holographic images to bring the century-old character and his worlds to life. And it’s not just the fans who will benefit from this; Steve Pitt of the Portsmouth Cultural Partnership says it will bring lots of jobs to Portsmouth. Pitt is quoted in the article: “What we are talking about is a world class, Sherlock Holmes experience. It would be very interactive and high quality. There are so many tie-ins around the legacy of Sherlock Holmes being ‘born’ in Portsmouth. That’s something that when we look at it, has the potential to create a massive amount of jobs. There are 6.9 million people who search for Sherlock Homes and Conan Doyle on Google every month. There is a massive market for this.” The idea is set to go for a private consultation next month.

I personally love the idea of theme park attractions popping up around books. It’ll get kids interested in reading as well as give them an outlet for their sleuthing. Or it could just be a bunch of old nerds walking around looking at inaccuracies, but that’s probably true of anywhere.

Enjoy today’s crazy-packed episode, check back tomorrow for our first edition of Nerdist News What the Fridays, and tell us in the comments below: would you make the trip to Sherlockland?
