Adam Jensen’s Arm from DEUS EX Will Soon Be a Reality

The human augmentation of the Deus Ex universe just got a little closer to reality (minus the moral quandaries and war) thanks to a collaboration between Eidos-Montreal, Open Bionics, and Razer.

Reported by The Verge, the above video shows a plan for a prosthetic arm to match the one used by Adam Jensen in the game. While it won’t have the superpowered abilities that go with it, its beauty will make you feel like you’re a video game character.

Andre Vu, executive brand director for Deus Ex Universe, says that fans are always asking when they are going to produce the arms that are featured in the game. While Deus Ex Universe is just a video game company and can’t actually produce them, that did trigger the idea for a collaboration.

Joel Gibbard, CEO of Open Bionics, was more than happy to be part of this collaboration. Gibbard built his first bionic hand at 17 and founded Open Bionics after college with the goal of making “affordable, functional, and beautiful prosthetics.”

They now have a semi-functional prototype of the arm and are currently working on getting a full range of abilities, such as grasping objects, before they release it. This will be assisted by the Stargazer division of Razer, whose goal is to have the arms motion act in real-time with a real hand. Once completed, the project files will be open source, so if you have a 3D printer and the knowhow, you can create your own Adam Jensen arm in your own home.

This is a great idea from these companies. They are proving that the images and ideas found in video games and science fiction can definitely become a reality. And an affordable, sometimes life-changing, one at that.

So what do you think? What other video game ideas would you like to see brought to life in this type of positive manner? Let me know on Twitter or sound off in the comments below.
