It’s been nearly 11 years since Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his surviving crew blasted off into the great unknown at the end of Serenity. Although the feature film offered a sense of closure for the short-lived but extremely beloved series Firefly, we still can’t help but wish we’d gotten to see more of Joss Whedon‘s series. Even after all of this time, fans of the sci-fi show still come together for cast reunions at comic conventions. But this time, former Firefly star Nathan Fillion had a new story to tell about what might have been.

While appearing alongside several of his fellow cast members at the Long Beach Comic Con, Fillion told audiences about Whedon’s planned opening scene for an episode of Firefly that was never filmed. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter (via IndieWire), Fillion said, “Joss once described an opening scene to me where we are looking at a planet with a ring around it and as we come in close, we see the ring is actually rocks and pieces of ships and old derelicts. It’s a junk ring. It’s the junkyards — we mentioned it in Firefly one time.”

Fillion continued: “We see little bits and we’re jumping slowly from bit to bit and as we get closer we see Serenity floating lifeless and these little people getting on and coming through it. And as they get into the airlock and they close it, they come and there’s Malcolm Reynolds, bleeding and cut, strapped down with giant guns and not looking great. He’s got these two giant guns, and he says, ‘Get off my ship.’”

That actually sounds pretty close to the Firefly episode “Out of Gas,” which left Fillion’s Mal badly wounded and the last crew member on his ship after Serenity became trapped in space. At one point in that story, Mal actually did order some intruders off the ship at gun point, but not quite in the way that he described at his latest convention appearance. It’s possible that the scene he was referring to was originally meant for that episode.
