We all have those shows we watch, where it’s just you in your home with your TV and a tea or whatever and it’s just your thing. For me growing up it was Mystery Science Theater 3000, just my brother and I watching and laughing. But when it comes to comedy, sometimes you just need the communal experience of laughing with a large group. Now, fans are going to get to get that MST3K experience surrounded by hundreds of other like-minded (probably) individuals as the newly revived series is embarking on its first countrywide live tour.
Joel Hodgson, the creator of MST3K, is launching a tour which currently has 29 live dates beginning in early July and going until mid-August. Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), Tom Servo (Baron Vaughn), Crow T. Robot (Hampton Yount), and Gypsy (Rebecca Hanson) will be riffing the MST3K classic movie, Eegah, as well as a special super secret surprise movie that Joel assures will not have been featured on the series before. How exciting! There’ll also be special video inserts by Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and Max (Patton Oswalt) and probably some more weirdness as well.
If you’ve ever gone to see RiffTrax live, either in person or at the cinema, you know the joy and uproarious laughter that can be had watching master riffers skewer a movie. I got to see the premiere of Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater 3000 in a movie theater recently and it was really something special. MST3K LIVE: The “Watch Out for Snakes” Tour will be a pretty great way to see stuff you love while the cast and crew wait to hear if Netflix orders another season.
Backers of the Kickstarter will get first dibs at 10am on Tuesday, May 16, and then they’ll open up to the general public 12 hours later (at 10pm…that’s how time works). More info will be forthcoming in the not-too-distant future.
