MTV’s SCREAM Adaptation Announces Pilot Director, Cast

Blerg. Scream is one of my top five favorite horror movies of all time. Wes Craven probably takes the gold in my own personal Masters of Horror Olympics. When MTV announced that they would adapt the feature film franchise created by Kevin Williamson into a television series, the one glimmer of hope in my book was the rumor that Craven himself would return to direct the pilot. As a fan, one thing I’ve always appreciated about the Scream movies is that, despite the somewhat controversial production shake ups that have allegedly gone on behind the scenes, Craven was always at the helm.

This morning Variety announced that Craven would NOT be directing the pilot after all, and that Jamie Travis from Faking It would be taking the lead. We’ve also been told the names of the primary cast including Willa Fitzgerald (Alpha House, Royal Pains), Amy Forsyth (Torment, Reign), John Karna (Premature, The Neighbors), Carlson Young (Key and Peele, The Kroll Show) and Amadeus Serafini.

As we’ve seen over the past few years, movie-to-TV adaptations aren’t always a bad thing; just look at NBC’s Hannibal or A&E’s Bates Motel. But something about turning Scream into a TV show rings a little hollow to me. The Craven/Williamson original was such a smart, savvy and angry movie with a whole lot to say about teenagers in our culture today. Will those same themes still be present in the adaptation from the network who brings you Teen Mom and My Super Sweet Sixteen?

To be fair, Teen Wolf has a rabid fan base (no pun intended), so maybe Scream will be a worthy follow up in the MTV scripted reboot cannon. What do you all think? Now that Craven is officially out, will you tune in to Scream when it hits your TV? Would you want to see more from the franchise that’s almost twenty years old? Scream at us with your thoughts in the comment section below.
