Modder Makes STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT Almost Too Real

Star Wars Battlefront has been leading fans into fantastical space warfare for a week now. While reviews have been mixed on presentation vs. expectation (you can check out Edwin’s review for us right here), the game has received a lot of praise for its visual presentation. That wasn’t enough for some people, however. PC modder Martin Bergman released an album on imgur today of screen captures from Star Wars Battlefront after running the game through his “Toddyhancer” mod. The result is a Star Wars game that looks close to photo-realistic.

Some of the still frames Bergman offers look like they came straight from a live-action video, as his graphics mod increases the sharpness in detail, as well as manipulates the light and shadow effects. The increase in contrast gives a much more dramatic look to the washed out landscape of the Tatooine desert, which cast more realistic shadows over textures.

The biggest issue that one can point out with the mod, however, is the fact that it is just screen captures at the moment. The reason plenty of games don’t strive for this kind of attention to detail in their graphics is the strain it would cause on a computer to maintain that detail and run smooth motion at constant frame rates. Beautiful images are great, but a mod has to be seen in action before it is anything more than a filter over a picture.

Bergman did release a video a few months back of Grand Theft Auto V with the “Toddyhancer” mod on it, and while it does look nice, the video does not boast the same sort of visuals the Battlefront pictures do. Bergman does promise a Battlefront video soon, however, so we will all get to see if the mod holds up.
