MINECRAFT Inspired a Father and Son to Break Open Diamond Ore

Generally speaking, imitating things you see in video games is a really bad idea, as any frog that has tried to cross a busy road would tell you if it could talk. But sometimes, just sometimes, games can inspire you to learn stuff, or at least ask questions about their physics. Like, if the diamond ore in Minecraft splits open to reveal real diamonds every time you hit it with a pickax a few times, does that mean the real-life equivalent works that way too?

It’s a good thing there’s a whole YouTube channel–called “What’s Inside?”–dedicated to cutting things open and finding this stuff out, because nobody else would spend $500 on a piece of “diamond ore” (in real life, we call it kimberlite and it forms from a type of magma). But father and son team Dan and Lincoln Markham, whose channel blew up huge after an elementary school project led them to cut open various sports balls on camera, are dedicated to this stuff. As part of a crossover with fellow YouTuber Stacy Hinojosa of “Stacy Plays,” she took them inside the game of Minecraft, and they recruited her to help bust some rocks open. When a diamond-tipped saw is brought into the mix, it’s diamonds versus diamonds in what we might call a civil war of hardened carbon forms.

Warning: you might experience dad envy as you watch. But you’ll probably get educated, at least a little bit.

Do you think the $500 they spent was totally worth it? What would you bust open if you had all the means? Cut into comments below and give us the dirt.
