Microsoft Announces New Hardware: Project Scorpio and Xbox One S

Microsoft’s E3 press conference was pretty impressive on the game front, but the biggest news to come from the briefing was the announcement of not just one but TWO new consoles! The previously leaked, slim Xbox One was officially revealed as the Xbox One S. But more importantly (and shockingly), we also got the Project Scorpio announcement–which was touted as the ultimate gaming machine with enough horsepower to support virtual reality and specs that could blow their current competition out of the water.

As many suspected, the slimmer hardware is much smaller than the original machine (it still looks like a VCR player), and will be capable of playing video in the vaunted ultra-HD 4K resolution. Best of all, you’ll be able to pick this bad boy up this August for $299. Take a gander at the announcement trailer above.

As for Project Scorpio, we know it will have incredibly powerful 4K gaming (natively and VR), and that it launches holiday 2017. We didn’t see the actual machine, but that doesn’t matter–this was Microsoft throwing the gauntlet down. Now we wait for Sony to make their move. We know the PS4.5 is real, and we also know it won’t be here at E3. So if not this week, when will we see it? And will it be launching this year? Microsoft definitely seems to have the advantage here.

The Xbox One controller is also getting a few upgrades like increased range, but don’t worry: the beloved design isn’t changing. Overall, this is a clean redesign that shouldn’t alienate current Xbox owners.

Do you currently have an Xbox One? Will you be upgrading, or does this low price point entice you to finally get a One? Do you even care about playing your games in 4K? When do you think we’ll be seeing the PS4.5? What do you think about the announcement of project Scorpio? Let us know in the comments below!
