MGM Celebrates 90 Years of Filmmaking

MGM, the studio that brought you Carrie, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, James Bond, The Silence of the Lambs, and The Pink Panther, celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. The festivities kicked off Wednesday with the iconic Leo the Lion receiving a paw-print on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The studio released a statement recalling its formation during the golden age of Hollywood:

“Founded in 1924 when theater magnate Marcus Loew bought and merged Metro Pictures Corp. with Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Productions, MGM and its legendary roaring lion logo signify the golden era of Hollywood to film lovers around the world. Since its inception, the company has led the industry in creating some of Hollywood’s greatest stars and is home to over 175 Academy Award-winning films, including 14 Best Pictures.”

Throughout 2014, the studio will be celebrating almost 100 years in the entertainment business by releasing Blu-ray titles for some of its best known movies, including Fargo, In the Heat of the Night, The Birdcage, and RoboCop. A commemorative “one-of-a-kind collector’s book and bonus video disc companion” will also be made available, featuring insight into the golden years of the studio, MGM’s most memorable franchises, and interviews with filmmakers and stars of some of their most popular titles.

A trailer has also been released online featuring classic scenes from MGM films like Rain Man, The Princess Bride, Thelma and Louise, Some Like It Hot, and Rocky. The trailer will be shown in movie theaters across the country and will also be featured on TV channels like MGM HD, Impact, and THIS TV. In addition, MGM has also created a Tumblr account boasting “the first Tumblr integration to feature a studio’s full library.”
