Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway Reunite in Tense Trailer for SERENITY

It makes sense that after saving the entire human race together in Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway are trading in the stress of traveling across the universe for the quiet island life in their new film Serenity (not to be confused with the movie based on Joss Whedon’s Firefly, of the same name). However based on the film’s first moody, mysterious trailer, things aren’t any less intense–or deadly–back here on Earth in a small town where everyone either knows everything or nothing.

The first look at the film features McConaughey’s “John” being asked to throw Hathaway’s abusive husband (played by Jason Clarke) into the ocean so the sharks can eat him. Despite it being an apparent secret plan, though, there seem to be a lot of people on the island who know something major is going on. While John struggles to decide what to do while unearthing how everyone around him knows something he doesn’t, an even bigger secret looks to be lurking below the surface.

Temptation, right and wrong, creepy strangers, a murder plot between ex-lovers, a single boat out on the ocean, Diane Lane, and Matthew McConaughey talking in circles about the nature of life? Now that’s a trailer! Who needs the stress of interstellar travel when you can just move to a sleepy island?

Serenity, directed by Steven Knight (who also co-wrote the upcoming The Girl in the Spider’s Web), also stars Djimon Hounsou and Jeremy Strong, and it sails into theaters this fall on October 19th.
