Make Your Own Japanese Water Cake at Home

Last year we wrote about Water Cake, the clear Japanese dessert known as Mizu Shingen Mochi that has people lined up and down the street just to get a taste. The article was so polarizing that readers were up in arms over this near-invisible snack. And as you may have guessed, the water cake is making news once again: soon, the see-through treat is going to be available in America. Whether you love it or hate it, now you can try the mochi for yourself and make your very own water cake at home with this simple recipe.

Blogger Little Miss Bento is known on the web for her adorable lunch creations, but she also has quite the arsenal of traditional Japanese recipes. Her latest post is a tutorial for making a homemade version of the clear dessert but she took it a step further by adding a blooming Sakura flower in the center to make the treat even more magical.

With a simple mixture of three ingredients, the sweet mochi comes together easily — but it’s the pickled cherry blossoms she adds that brings the dessert to life. The heat from the liquid sugar mixture is what makes the flower petals open up and then stay in a lifelike state once the dessert is chilled.

This unique treat is a beautiful treat that will have your dinner guests astounded and in awe of your cooking prowess. Even more amazing is the fact that the dessert disappears after 30 minutes if left on its own at room temperature. Quite a mesmerizing way to end a meal.
