Lose Yourself In A Map Of Every Music Genre Ever

That wasn’t just a hyperbolic headline. You will sincerely lose chunks of time browsing this map of over 1300 musical genres. People of the internet, we present to you…

Every Noise at Once! Click that link and prepare to be immersed in all sorts of musical awesomeness.

Oh, hey! You’re back. Did you remember to eat something? It’s been a few hours since you clicked that.

The site’s creator, Glenn McDonald, describes Every Noise at Once as “an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1374 genres by The Echo Nest. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier.”

If you’re anything like us, that last paragraph just gave you brain freeze, so we’ll break it down for you. Every Noise at Once is a clickable map of over 1300 musical genres. Clicking on one will give you a sample of that style, hitting the “scan” button at the top will skip around at random, searching a band in the top right will give you that particular band’s genres.

Want to hear more examples of each genre? Well this is where it gets even more awesome. Clicking the “>>” on a genre or searching a band and then clicking on a particular search result will bring you to similar map of that genre where you can then explore the same concept Every Noise at Once is built on within that particular style.

For example, suppose a certain Nerdist writer has a particular soft spot for Ska music. Searching “The Hippos” brings up ska punk, and ska which allows him to browse all sorts of bands that frankly just result in a whole bunch of smiles. Similarly, searching for something like Dave Brubeck will result in, among others, the bebop genre and while it may be my second favorite ninja turtle villain, results in a phenomenal scan-able list including Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker.

What might be the coolest function of this site is that by clicking on the “>>” of a particular artist links you to them on Spotify.
