Livestream on Periscope through Your GoPro Camera

Break out your accessories and tell your followers to hold on tight–you’ll soon have the ability to livestream with a GoPro camera on Periscope. The Twitter-owned Periscope and the leader in durable action cameras announced that with an update to the iPhone app you can now stream through your GoPro with relative ease. Periscope has added new lock functions to their app so that you can stow your iPhone away safely while you stream your next skydive or whitewater rafting trip.

The two companies are planning to demonstrate the new GoPro/Periscope livestream capabilities at the X Games later this week which, when you think about it, is the perfect place for such a thing. Seeing it in action with some real professionals is an exciting idea. We’ll still likely see the same old livestreams from the people and companies we follow even if they decide to add a GoPro but this may open up new possibilities of seeing other extreme athletes at work. It also opens the door for celebrities to share experiences that we’d otherwise not see if not for the versatility of a GoPro. Imagine a livestream on a day of stunt training for an actor or a band sharing their POV during a concert.

We also can’t help but think of the schadenfreude we’ll feel seeing GoPro livestream failures. Anyone who’s ever used one knows that the amount of epic footage recorded on them is dwarfed by the amount of time spent staring into it wondering if it’s on and recording. At the time of this article, linking a GoPro to Periscope is available only on the iPhone app with no date yet on Android and is limited to the HERO4 Black or HERO4 Silver GoPro cameras.
