If thereâs one thing that absolutely makes me nerd rage, itâs lag, a gamerâs worst nightmare. Unluckily for four volunteers, Swedish internet service provider UME.net made that nightmare a reality in an experiment dubbed âLiving With Lag.â
The experiment demonstrates the trouble people face if lag occurred in real life. In the video below, the volunteers are outfitted with an Oculus Rift that has a delay of one-third of a second or a full three seconds and given different tasks to perform, such as playing ping pong, cooking, and dancing. The results of their attempted actions are nothing surprising but still hilarious, especially if youâve ever used a dial-up connection and understand the pain that came with waiting for an image to load.
Take a look at the agony below:
I have to admit, thatâs one clever campaign and one in which I hope I never have to live.
Seems like a lot of their problems were, at least partially, due to lack of peripheral vision (narrow field of view) and mono-vision (lack of depth perception). Especially combined with lag, those things would really make things extremely difficult.
Wow Emil, you’re right. Let’s not do anything fun ever, because the whole world can’t join in. Let’s never have high expectations of our technology, because there are people in the world who have less of it. Let’s not enjoy a fun blog post and video without a nice helping of self righteous sanctimony reminding us how privileged we are. Thanks for bringing us all back to reality. We should all be donating our phones to third world countries. You first.
And the majority of humanity haven’t even used a phone. Ever. There’s lag for you.
Hey, thats my hometown 🙂
