Akira Kurosawa is one of the greatest filmmakers of all-time, and his thrilling multiple-perspective masterpiece Rashomon has long been–rightfully–celebrate as a landmark piece of cinema. And now according to Deadline another iconic director will be taking a shot at the story as Stephen Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment has picked up the rights to adapt the seminal feature into a TV show.
Kurosawa’s searing psychological thriller is an exploration of the concept of truth, justice, and honesty centered around a brutal crime and the different versions of events as reported by multiple different characters including the that of Kurosawa’s most famous collaborator Toshiro Mifune as a local bandit, and even the ghost of the murdered samurai. It was an utterly groundbreaking film, and it seems like the show will take influence from the much imitated format with each season focusing on a singular crime from multiple viewpoints.
According to the report “the series will be executive produced by Amblin TV’s co-presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, with Atmosphere’s Mark Canton and David Hopwood and Opus 7’s Leigh Ann Burton.” In a statement Frank and Falvey said “We couldn’t be more excited to adapt this extraordinary film as the foundation for a new dramatic mystery thriller series… It will explore the boundaries of truth and how different perspectives don’t often reveal the same reality.” It sounds like the minds behind the show have a singular vision for bringing Rashomon into the contemporary age and we’ll be intrigued to see where this project–from the company behind The Haunting of Hill House–goes.
